Since the sad closure of OK Karaoke, there’s only been one dedicated karaoke bar in Leeds, and that’s Mix. Although the venue is open seven days a week for private booth karaoke, it’s the public “karaoke cocktail lounge” on Friday & Saturday nights that qualifies for the Quest.
We turned up pretty late and things were in full swing. The bar has several large booths for groups of friends to sit together and a few smaller tables in the middle, but for the most part it’s standing room only. It’s been very recently redecorated, and the entrance hall and toilets still look a bit like a building site.
This place is all about the karaoke. There aren’t even songlists — you’re encouraged to write anything you might want to sing on a piece of paper and the DJ will see if he can find it. It’s pretty much perfect karaoke DJing – the incidental music is only used in the time it takes the next singer to get on stage so when we were there it was maybe half an hour before I got to sing (Born To Run, in case you care).
While the karaoke is fun, there is definitely nothing going on with the beer side of things. Amstel, Heineken, Fosters on tap and Peroni in bottles. Bah. And it’s not cheap either!
Basically, you come here for the karaoke. The karaoke is awesome, but it would be nice to have some good beers to go with it!
