This well-known secret nightspot is quite literally underground.
Tucked away down some steps in the financial quarter is a psychedelic hideaway called Baby Jupiter. It’s bigger than you might expect upon first entering; walk past the bar and you’ll find a large back seating area which turns into a dance floor on club nights.

Everything looks like what we imagine the swinging sixties to be: alternating seats of purple velvet or bright orange plastic, funky patterned wallpaper, a disco ball and a giant space monster. (As you do.)
You can’t have too much orange plastic in one room. Fact.
While this place could rest on the laurels of its theme, it pays attention to stocking good beers too. There are real ales from Leeds and Kirkstall plus MJ Fortis and Brooklyn Lager on keg. There’s also a nice selection of craft bottles, including Brooklyn, Coopers Pale, Anchor, Goose Island and Sierra Nevada Torpedo. This far into the quest we’re used to seeing these offerings, but that doesn’t take away from Baby Jupiter’s well-earned high marks for beer.

They do serve lunch Monday through Friday, so we’ll hopefully get round to trying that sometime. After work during the week it tends to be very quiet and provides a fun atmosphere to relax. But it’s also a music venue, and when there’s a DJ or live music on a weekend, the place fills up fast and quickly feels like the popular nightspot that it is.

It can be a bit warm in the summer and the one thing it’s missing is any outdoor seating. You’ll also pay a bit more here than at some other places (bottles average about £4), but the fun little step back in time makes it all worth it.
