Bar Room Bar: the name instantly makes me imagine the proprietor saying “We sell drinks! Do we need to do anything else? Buy drinks!” And until recently, that’s definitely all this Call Lane staple was – a place to buy nondescript drinks of various colours. It’s recently had a colourful makeover and rebranded as part of the Pizza Kitchen & Bar national chain. Has it got something extra to offer now?
Well, the chain’s name is no lie. There is a massive wood-burning pizza oven on the bar’s ground floor, and they have a large food menu including pizzas with “fresh dough guaranteed”. I’m not sure what exactly the terms of this guarantee are…
We’re not here to review pizzas, though – what about the beer? They have a handful of decent world beers, including Singha, Blue Moon, Leffe, Erdinger and Staropramen. There’s also the keg variant of Greene King IPA on tap, which is probably the closest thing we’ll find on Call Lane to a real ale. There’s also a handful of single malt whiskies, including Springbank (one of my favourites), although the bartenders were pretty bemused by how to put it through on the till. This is really a cocktail bar so it’s good to see beer is more than an afterthought (although not much more).
Bar Room Bar is pleasant enough, but nothing about it really grabs us, unless we were looking for a guaranteed pizza.
