To our knowledge, The Wardrobe is the only bar in Quarry Hill, Leeds’s arts quarter. It has a captive audience from the music college, the BBC, the Playhouse and Northern Ballet so it could perhaps get away with being a bit rubbish. What we found was not rubbish at all.
The space is very large, with the ground floor divided into general café/bar area and a table service restaurant and the basement is a live music venue and club (legendary 60s disco Brighton Beach now takes place here once a month). We felt extremely comfortable even though we’d chosen to forgo the sofas for some food. The atmosphere also benefits from very friendly and helpful staff.
The beer selection is pretty decent, with a couple of cask ales (Theakston’s Best and Hop Studio White Rose) and several decent bottles including Brooklyn, Erdinger, Duvel and Tiger. There’s also a Hop Studio pilsner on keg which is an interesting change from the usual eurolagers. Prices aren’t dirt cheap but they wouldn’t break the bank either (pilsner is £3.20).
Food is pricy but it seems they have a lot of offers to bring the prices down. Mondays are exceptionally good value, with a beer (Tiger, but you may be able to twist their arm for something else) and a really good burger for £5.
The Wardrobe is an unexpected little gem out here on the Wrong Side of the Ring Road. We especially liked the atmosphere and the service, but the beers and food would bring us back too, especially if there’s something fun going on downstairs.
