Dish used to be a tiny restaurant in the Electric Press, but when the legendary restaurant Anthony’s had to close down in 2013, Dish took over its premises hoping to provide some kind of legacy.
The restaurant occupies the larger downstairs space, but we’re interested in the upstairs bar. This is a small space with a handful of tables, several of which have sofa seating. The bartender when we visited was very friendly and clearly keen on providing a comfortable experience for us.
Most people would probably come here for the cocktails, but of course it’s beer for us. In regular bottles they have a modest selection including Brooklyn Lager, Wharfebank Tether, St Mungo, Vedett and Erdinger Dunkel. But the star item has to be the 750ml bottles of the exceptional Brooklyn Local 1 at about £15 a go (we had this beer for the first time at the original Dish years ago and it has stayed one of our favourites since then). On tap there are just lagers: Moretti and Dortmunder. Prices are pretty high (expect to pay over £4 for anything) but, y’know, it’s a fancy place.
There are bar snacks as well as the full selection of starters from downstairs available to eat upstairs, and the free wifi suggests they want people to come here and chill out for extended periods.
Chilled out is the right way to describe Dish. It’s probably a good place to escape from the craziness of the city, but aside from that (and the one amazing fancy beer) there isn’t a huge amount to draw us back. Unless we’re eating downstairs, of course.
