The George is another place we’d never been to prior to our quest, and it’s one that we were definitely pleased to find. It has all the trappings of the local pub — friendly bar staff, charming fixtures including stained glass windows and a large antique clock above the bar, and of course plenty of real ales. Their six hand pumps all offer a local cask such as Leeds Pale, Black Sheep or Acorn; a wide enough selection to keep us happy. They also have Sol and Becks in the fridge, Tetley’s and a few mass-produced lagers on tap and your usual spirits behind the bar, though we can’t imagine that many people come in for a cocktail.
Being right across from Leeds General Infirmary, they most likely do a good business at lunchtime and just after work, but on a Saturday night when we went, it was delightfully quiet. There are TVs showing sport, but we found them unimposing. The views of gorgeous LGI and St. George’s Church, coupled with a great music selection, made for a really nice atmosphere. And with ale at £3/pint, a visit won’t break the bank either.

The only strike against this pub is geography. Being right down the street from one of our absolute favourite spots, it’s unlikely we would specifically come here very often. Its vibe and ale selection are good, but just not as good as at Veritas. That said, should the latter be closed for some reason or absolutely rammed, The George would be a perfectly acceptable back-up plan.

A reasonable, quite old fashioned pub. Beer selection was not great but a little different from the norm, and there is some comfy seating. Nice view of the old hospital across the road. I would still think about going to Veritas over this, but a crawl of George, Veritas and Victoria would be a nice alternative route for people wanting a change from their usual haunts.
