The beaming light of the Slug and Lettuce lights up Park Row. Kind of.
The Slug and Lettuce is definitely not a place you go to have good beer. They don’t have any. There’s Peroni and San Miguel on tap but not a real ale in sight. And in bottles the only passable choice is Cobra, mixed amongst some really bad lagers. They even have Coors Light, for crying out loud! You don’t see that around very often, for very good reason. And charging £3.70 for a pint of Beck’s isn’t going to score any points in our book for value.
You might visit the Slug and Lettuce, however, if you were after some very cheap decent-ish pub food. We went on a Monday, which previously unbeknownst to us is their 50%-off-all-food night. They have several other promotions throughout the week, like 2-for-1 curries on Tuesdays. The food is (just) okay, and despite being incredibly crowded the service was surprisingly speedy. It’s also child-friendly until 6:30pm.
Go ahead and try to find a decent beer. I dare you.
This place definitely gets very noisy at peak times, but other than that the atmosphere is perfectly enjoyable. It’s clean, large enough for big groups and when it’s not busy can be a nice place to enjoy a cup of coffee and a dessert. (And as a side note, this place may win the award for the longest and most winding road to the toilets. It’s epic.)
So really, there’s not a lot to say about the Slug and Lettuce. No good beer, but for a chavvy chain pub, it does okay.
