Looking for four floors of excellent beer? Come on in!

Looking for four floors of excellent beer? Come on in!

Every time you visit a bar that has a roof terrace, you’re probably thinking, “This is nice, but you know what this roof terrace needs? Another roof terrace on top of it.” Well, look no further. Such a place has found its home on The Headrow, in the massive building where Big Lil’s Saloon once stood.

The main bar in the ground floor beer hall.

Those who remember Big Lil’s or know its reputation will instantly notice a very different atmosphere. The folks behind Belgrave have replaced this long-empty building—once famous for frequent brawls—with a stylish beer hall, restaurant, and music venue with outdoor space of some kind on every one of its four floors.

Unpasteurized Urquell. Shiny!

Unpasteurized Pilsner Urquell. Shiny!

Beer lovers will delight not only in the excellent selection of kegs, casks and bottles from around the globe, but also in the tanks of unpasteurized Pilsner Urquell, making Headrow House the first “tankovna” in northern England. We tried it and it really does taste remarkably better than the usual variety, so it’s worth a try.

The views from the double roof terrace are worth the price of admission.

The full restaurant Ox Club will open soon, and in the meantime one of the roof terraces serves small meals from the “Box Club.” With extensive seating, a cocktail bar, and—as already mentioned—two roof terraces, this place really has it all. Though it has Belgrave’s fingerprints all over it, it certainly has its own identity with a slightly more upmarket feel.

And if you're hungry, grab a snack here.

Your questers sometimes wonder just how many big fancy craft beer bars Leeds can actually support. Quite a few, it would seem, as new ones keep opening with no end in sight.

We won’t complain.

  1. Nice to see some acknowledgement of Pilsner Urquell’s greatness. Shame it’s £4.60 but in this specific case it may be justified. The only real issue is the pilsner is so good the frankly terrific selection of bottle beers seems almost surplus to requirements, despite the choice constituting a perfectly good bar all by itself.

The space is really well done, seems like a Belgrave for Adults (I still enjoy Belgrave nonetheless), though the size of it means it needs to stay quite full to have any atmosphere.

Only downside is if you sit on the seats to the left of the bar as you walk in, the condensation from the exposed metal pipes will drip on you all evening. Fun!

Leeds was overdue a bar that genuinely added something and now it has it. Good stuff.
